Alquézar ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VILLAGES IN SPAIN A medieval village Perched high above the Vero canyon, in a dramatic natural setting that belongs both to the Sierra y los Cañones de Guara Natural Park and the River Vero Cultural Park. Alquézar is a must-see in Somontano. Declared a Historic Artistic Site, it allows visitors to step back into its medieval past.

Alquézar is also the starting point for countless excursions and adventure activities.

City of wine B ARB ASTRO RECOMMENDED ITINERARY Barbastro, capital of Somontano and city of the Vero, has long been a meeting and trading hub for the people of Somontano and neighbouring districts.

A crossroads leading to the Pyrenean valleys, Barbastro is set in a privileged landscape rich in natural beauty, historic and cultural heritage, and top-quality produce.

It is also the perfect starting point for exploring other parts of the province of Huesca: • Cerler (Posets-Maladeta National Park-Ski Resort): 93 km • Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park: 70 km • Aínsa: 53 km • Bielsa: 87 km • Benabarre: 36 km • Carrasca de Lecina: 40 km (1) Take a stroll along the riverbank with its three fountains, colourful façades and oil press. Next to it, the church of San Francisco preserves a pointed arch in the central nave from the 16th century, as well as a crypt with seated burials. (2) Head along Calle Hermanos Argensola, where you will find fine examples of Aragonese Renaissance architecture, such as the palace of the Argensola brothers with its 16th century carved wooden eaves, the headquarters of the National Distance Learning University and the Town Hall, renovated in the 1950s. (3) Halfway along this route, Plaza del Mercado is the city’s most popular spot, where weekly fruit and vegetable markets are held. (4) The Cathedral, its tower and the Diocesan Museum – home to invaluable works of religious art – make up the city’s essential heritage, all located in the historic Entremuro quarter.

We recommend visiting Barbastro Cathedral and the Diocesan Museum. A Gothic cathedral featuring a magnificent altarpiece by Damián Forment and Juan de Liceire.

Saturday is market day Every Saturday morning, Somontano’s market gardeners gather in Barbastro’s Plaza del Mercado to sell their produce.

We recommend a leisurely stroll through Barbastro, soaking up its commercial spirit and popping into our shops to take home some of the “flavours of Somontano”.

Did you know Barbastro has a dessert made with borage?

Crespillo is a dessert whose main ingredient is the borage leaf. An exquisite Somontano speciality, it was traditionally made with the intention of “impregnating the olive trees”. In Barbastro, the Fiesta del Crespillo is held every March and is recognised as a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest.
